Girls vs. Boys

My girlfriends and I often discuss the pros and cons of "girl-dressing" vs. "guy-dressing". It's an issue we ponder pretty much every time we go shopping.
Girl-dressing is what we call it when we dress for other girls; when we wear something trendy and stylish, when we're experimenting with color or proportion, or when we're going for a look that's classy, not sexy (or our idea of understated sexy). Girl-dressing is when we make the conscious decision to wear the fashion-forward empire dress/high-waisted jeans/ballet flats, knowing that while the guys may be unimpressed or confused, girls will appreciate the outfit.

Guy-dressing is, of course, dressing for guys. It's a generally uncomplicated outfit, not too fashion forward. Something tight, low-cut, maybe involving heels, but most often just flip flops - something guys understand.

I'll admit that I've stooped to dressing for guys from time to time - at parties, or out on a date - although I always try not to sacrifice my personal style. However, for my prom last year, I decided to forgo the expected skin-tight, floor-length gown and go with something more me. While the guys probably didn't quite get my sequined cocktail dress, everyone loved it and it was sooo fun to wear. I guess for prom I didn't dress for girls or guys... I dressed for myself.

There are fashionable designers like Versace and Dolce and Gabbana whose overtly seductive outfits sell what could be considered a man's idea of sexy. I guess what I'm asking is: From a fashion perspective, is it ever o.k. to dress for a man, or, for that matter, anyone other than yourself?

Who do you dress for?
